Seed Grant Programs support research and collaboration between the University of Maryland and the co-sponsoring institution. These programs include partnerships with the Smithsonian Institution, the University of Maryland Baltimore, the Future of Information Alliance, the National Cancer Institute, Leidos, and the University of Maryland Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research. Seed grants encourage new teams of investigators to cross institutional and disciplinary boundaries, to enhance established collaborative teams to move to the next level in their research, to establish specific high impact research foci and/or generate preliminary data to support new areas of endeavor and to encourage research that leads to new funding opportunities. Staff work to advance health literacy science and translate research findings in to education, public policy, and community interventions, to be a resource and a voice for consumers, legislators, media, and health practitioners, to educate current and emerging public health workforce on health literacy and health communication and to promote and encourage community engagement to improve health literacy in Maryland and across the country.

These efforts are intended to facilitate research collaborations by reducing administrative obstacles for researchers and strengthening our position as a top tier global research institution by encouraging joint proposal endeavors, research administration, and researcher exchange programs. The Division of Research developed an administrative training program titled Borderless Research Administration Knowledge Exchange (BRAKE) that focuses on engaging international institutions as strategic cohorts concentrated on building expertise in the management and oversight of U.S. federal funding.
